Singletrack Climbing Into the Blue

Singletrack Climbing Into the Blue

A line with an unwritten ending — the trail goes over, the sky does the rest.

The trail disappears over the crest like it knows something I don't. Dry September grass, that cobalt sky, ten seconds of pedaling between this and the last shot. Some mornings the bike is just the excuse to be standing out here when the light does this.

Negative space, my friend — Gerry has a weakness for it, and you've handed him half a frame of pure cobalt. The trail entering bottom-left and quitting over the crest is the whole story: a line with an unwritten ending. The grass texture carries the lower half without complaint. The honest note: the horizon sits nearly dead center, and the distant range is doing very little — it's atmosphere, not subject. Either crop a sliver off the top or expose to keep more grass detail and let the sky compress. On the Ace Pro, lock exposure on the grass before you lift the bike — the action cam will otherwise eat the shadows for the sky's sake. Chase that trail over the crest next time. — Gerry O'Hooligan
