Snow already on the high peaks

Standing still was the only way to fit the whole argument — shaded path underfoot, meadow going gold in the middle, snow already sitting on the peaks above the treeline. My eye kept claiming the mountains were closer than they looked, and the camera backed me up for once. Pines along the left edge kept the frame from spilling sideways, which is the main reason vertical worked.

Vertical was the correct call, my friend — you've stacked path, meadow, treeline and snow line in four clean bands, and the pines on the left do the framing you'd otherwise have had to crop for. Gerry likes that the meadow gets the soft light while the peaks keep theirs; clouds cooperating is not something you can plan, only be ready for, and you were. The weakness is the top two-thirds: sky and distant range own most of the frame while the path — your stated subject — gets squeezed into the bottom sliver. Tap the exposure on the shaded path before you shoot and take half a step back; the iPhone's wide end will give the trail more floor without losing a single peak. Snow already sitting up there in September — next hike, get out earlier and Gerry wants the same frame with frost on that meadow.
